Fish conservation measures – there’s so much that’s possible!

But threats remain!
Development plans on the Oder – risks to nature and sustainable use

The Oder is one of the last major, relatively natural rivers in Europe. However, the Polish government is planning to develop the Oder with funds from the World Bank, the EU, and the Council of Europe’s Development Bank – and Germany has also committed to this development in a bilateral agreement. But concrete implementation plans and timelines on the German side are not publicly available.

LIFE and freshwater fish

“The conservation of Europe’s freshwater fish and their habitats is an important EU policy goal, supported not only through the Habitats Directive and the EU 2020 Biodiversity Strat- egy, but also, because of the clear and close links between water quality and fish conservation status, through the implementation of the Water Framework Directive and associated River Basin Management Plans. As the only specific source of European-level funding for nature conservation, the LIFE programme has made a huge contribution to the improved status of threatened fish species across the EU. This includes vital work in favour of near extinct species such as the houting (Coregonus oxyrinchus), allis shad (Alosa alosa) and saramugo (Anaecypris hispanica). In all, LIFE has already targeted 51 of the 65 freshwater fish species listed in the Annexes of the Habitats Directive.”

Dead wood for more life in gravel pits – enhancing fish stocks and biodiversity

“Would you like to increase fish stocks and species diversity in your gravel pit lake? It is great that you are considering achieving this by introducing dead wood. This guidance document is based on the research and implementation project BAGGERSEE. Here, we have summarised our practical experience for you.”
