GfI Conference 2024 in Berlin
Dear GfI members, dear fish enthusiasts,
Our 20th conference of the German Ichthyological Society (Gesellschaft für Ichthyologie, GfI), held from 7 to 10 November 2024 at Humboldt University of Berlin, was once again a very successful event. Our sincere thanks go to Dr David Bierbach, Faculty of Life Sciences, Division of Biology and Ecology of Fishes, Humboldt University of Berlin, and to his entire organising team for this wonderful conference!
The numerous contributions provided a wide range of insights into research with and on fishes, into the world of aquaria and the habitats of aquarium fishes, as well as into fisheries and practical applications. They also offered ample opportunity for intensive discussions and professional exchange – not only during the coffee breaks, but also at the always well-attended social programme. With the topic of animal welfare, this year’s meeting included a particularly important aspect that will certainly continue to gain significance in the future.
Student contributions
Once again, there were numerous student contributions, with the best presentations being awarded prizes:
- Letha Louisiana Wantania Sulawesi stream fish communities depend on connectivity and habitat diversity.
The two second prizes for student presentations were awarded to:
- Max Licht Sailfish, terns and their prey: interspecies predator interaction in the open ocean.
- Patrick Weygoldt Automatic detection and behavioural correlates of electrocommunication signals during competitions of the Brown Ghost Knifefish.
In addition, a People’s Choice Poster Award was presented to:
- Renee Pollmanns Diving into the shark tank – the ontogeny of the pelvic fin in the small-spotted catshark (Scyliorhinus canicula).
CONGRATULATIONS!
