The GfI-Fish Atlas consists of …
… distribution maps and accompanying species descriptions. Both contents are constantly updated. Additional information on ichthyological topics such as identification keys, red lists, etc. can be found here on the Ichthyology page.
Marine fish: The atlas also includes all marine fish species in the area of the Trilateral Wadden Sea Cooperation (NL, D, DK).
The GfI-Fish Atlas is being developed as an open access, non-profit project jointly by City University of Applied Sciences Bremen (as a result of research-based learning in the biology and computer science programmes) and on a voluntary basis by the German Ichthyological Society (GfI).
Technically, the atlas is based on the software architecture

GfI-Fish Atlas (Fish species atlas of Germany and Austria)
- Distribution maps of all freshwater and marine fish
- Also includes the area covered by the Trilateral Wadden Sea Cooperation (NL, D, DK)
- Precise source references for evidence
- Photo gallery
- Identification features, species descriptions
- Further reading and information
The data comes from literature research, database queries and also from reports by numerous registered users (citizen science). There are still major gaps in the distribution data. We are trying to fill these in the near future.
Ichthyological information
One of the aims of the GfI is to create a German-language forum for information, communication and publication in the field of ichthyology. As a zoological society, we want to report here on the biological diversity of fish fauna and research into it.
- How many species are there actually?
- How can they be distinguished?
- How can I observe and study fish?
- What is the situation regarding their habitats?
There are many answers to these questions from science, practice and voluntary work. We want to try to compile this information in its current state and thus contribute to the protection of fish species and waters.
