1995 – Founding year of the German Ichthyological Society

In 2020, we celebrated our 25th anniversary! To mark this occasion, we would like to take a brief look back at the history of the association.

The first initiatives to create a German-language forum for ichthyology began with the ‘Fish Symposium on Ecology, Ethology and Systematics’ in 1992 at the Zoological Institute of the Technical University of Braunschweig. This was followed by symposia in Pruchten (1994) and Salzburg (1996). One year before the symposium in Salzburg, the GfI was founded in Düsseldorf. The symposia then became the ‘Conferences of the Society for Ichthyology’, with the first of these events still receiving both conference names in parallel.

GfI-Mitteilungen (GfI Communications)

In the early years of the association’s history, there were the GfI Communications. These (predominantly internal association news items) can now be found either in the Bulletin, on the website or are sent to members via the GfI Info Mail.
